Lost His Horse

My First Internet Story

In 1954 my plan was to create a new comic every year. At most 2 to 4 people might read each one. That was the time of local telephone operators (our complete phone number at that time was 223); people wouldn't even dream of something like the Internet.

My motivation for creating this Web site, for this massive project, is basic and ingrained. My desire to create this Web site is the same desire I had when creating this comic. My choice of activities has not changed in over 50 years.

So, after waiting for half a century, from 1954
we present: Nick and Dick.

comic 5 - 1954

This comic was created soon after hearing a true and tragic report about how a junk dealer lost his horse. It was broadcast on the radio from a Calgary, Alberta station.

At this time, there was still the odd old man who used his old horse and wagon to make money. While the man in this report picked up junk, the one I recall in Drumheller went from door to door selling blocks of ice to the people in the town who didn't own a refridgerator.

In order to turn a simple radio report into an interesting story, I made up a couple of characters and then added these probable events. The only big flaw: I neglected to note that the firecracker went BANG!

Although my busiest file, Riel, Dumont, and the 1885 Rebellion is factual, I did err in my efforts to create a sketch for every page. The sketch of Riel banging on a table was my own invention. It was reported that Riel did respond at that time with anger, but nothing was said about hitting a table. The decision to add that sketch and leave it there is questionable. My motives there are similar to my motives here.

If you were thrilled by that story, you might appreciate the humor that is in these illustrated children's dinosaur stories:
Space Dinosaur, and Doomore Flies Again.
